As always, consent must come first; simply asking "Can I kiss you?" is a great place to start. Don't lead with your tongue or your teeth! Pay close attention to your partners' body language; try kissing with different pressure or in different positions.

Can I get an STD from kissing?

Although kissing is considered to be low-risk when compared to intercourse and oral sex, it’s possible for kissing to transmit CMV (CMV is related to the viruses that cause chickenpox, herpes simplex and mononucleosis), herpes, and syphilis. CMV can be present in saliva, and herpes and syphilis can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, particularly at times when sores are present. But kissing is a very low risk activity.
